Come end of the school year & excitement levels run high. Students want a much-deserved break from their studies. However, give a few days of sleeping late & being on social media & boredom starts catching up. Not to mention the fact that parents typically want their children to spend time productively. What then are things that students can do during their annual school break once they have taken the time to unwind? Here are some handy ideas:

1. Physical Activities

The annual school break is a great time to take care of your physical health. What better way than to enroll in a sport of your choice? You could join a swimming class & beat the heat or take to playing basketball, tennis, or even golf. Not only will it keep you physically fit & mentally agile, but it will also be a great place to make new friends.

2. Learn a new language

Learning a new language can be quite exhilarating! Communicating & sharing your thoughts with the help of a whole new vocabulary can feel extremely liberating. Not to mention the fact that it can open up new avenues- whether it is studying abroad or simply visiting new lands. These days there are a variety of options that enable you to learn your favorite language with ease. You can attend offline classes & master the skill with other fellow learners. Alternately if online is your preferred mode, there are several options for live classes as well as apps that help you master the skill at your own pace. So go ahead & get ready to say Hola! Or Comment Allez Vous?- as the case may be.

3. Volunteer

There is no better way to learn some real-life skills than to undertake community service. First and foremost it fills you with a strong sense of purpose as you can make a difference in someone’s life. That it helps you feel connected with the community is extremely important. Besides volunteering can even boost your self-esteem and give you a tremendous sense of accomplishment. The training & hands-on experience also helps you build valuable skills. Overall having contributed to someone’s life you also feel much happier!

4. Get Outdoors

While we spend enough time in front of screens, the annual school break is the best time to head outdoors. Visiting a mountain or a beach can be therapeutic in more ways than one. It is a great way to soak in the outdoors. However in case you cannot travel, it still doesn’t mean that you cannot head outdoors. You could be a tourist in your city. Go on sightseeing trips, take a heritage walk & more. There will be a lot that you will learn about the city.

5. Read

The school break can be the perfect time to catch up on reading. Whether you love to read thrillers or love to be transported to a different land via Sci-Fi, this is your big chance to curl up on the couch with a book. That it will improve your vocabulary, give wings to your imagination & more, are added perks. You could even join a book club where every week people decide to read a common book & then discuss it at length.

6. Learn about your family history

If you are asked to trace your family history, how far can you go? Use the break to discover interesting things about your family. You can create a family tree or even make up a coffee table book with details of your ancestors. Now wouldn’t that be super cool?

7. Intern

There is nothing quite like hands-on learning. So if you are exploring different career options, it will be a good idea to intern with a professional to learn the nuances of their work. Not only will it help you apply theoretical knowledge in the real world, but it will also go a long way in boosting your resume.

8. Workshops

Vacation is also the ideal time to join workshops of your interest. It could be photography, guitar, craft, dancing, or anything of your interest. You could even join some cooking classes. Let us face it cooking is a big life skill. Man or woman, boy or girl, we all belong in the kitchen because that’s where the food is. Why not use the annual school break to learn to cook some delicious dishes? You could even learn baking & dish out some yummy cakes.

Besides following your passion, these workshops also help you meet people with the same interests as you.

9. Watch Documentaries

What could be a better time to watch several documentaries of interest? They could range from the Oscar-winning The Elephant Whisperer to documentaries on self-motivation, adventure, travel & more. That they will offer you a whole new perspective, is a given!

10. Relax

All of this does not suggest that you spend your break running from one course to another. Ensure that you sleep well, relax & rejuvenate. Some amount of unstructured time is extremely important. Me-time can go a long way in recharging yourself & is extremely important for the mind, body & soul. By spending time with yourself & switching off from the world, you tend to think deeply & also indulge in self-discovery.
